Gobin Beginnings

"Beginnings" was the way Gobin first experienced a return to in-person worship after our pandemic exile. After more than a year of isolation and uncertainty, we returned to our roots. "Beginnings" follows a familiar pattern of Christian worship that pulls heavily from our own Anglican/Methodist tradition. And, more specific to our local context, the service will closely resemble that of the Gobin services in the post-1933 era of liturgical renewal. After all, it was our own Van Denman Thompson and Jerome Hixon who edited the 1935 Methodist Hymnal!

The "Beginnings" experience might be described as classical or liturgical. A service of word and table, "Beginnings" will include familiar prayers, liturgies, and hymns accompanied by our pipe organ or piano.

The Interlude

The Interlude is a 30-minute time of connection and relationship-building between our two worship services—Beginnings (9:30am) and Mosaic (11:00am). Whether you’ve just finished worship or are preparing to enter into it, The Interlude offers a chance to meet others in the Gobin community over good food, good beverages, and even better conversation.

Hosted in the refreshment area in the south transept of the sanctuary, this gathering space serves as a bridge—where stories are shared, friendships formed, and the Spirit continues to move. Come linger, connect, and make space for one another.

Gobin Mosaic

In art, a mosaic is made by arranging small pieces of variously colored material to form pictures or patterns. In Gobin Mosaic, participants are invited to engage with a pattern of word and table that might be described as creative and diverse. Liturgies and prayers represent diverse and often minority populations.

Music will play a central role in the service and may be expressed through multiple genres. Whereas early Methodist hymnody was often used as a means to teach, in Mosaic, music will often be used as a means for connecting the participant to the holy through prayer and repetition. Gobin's own "house band" Gobin Worship Collective plays each Sunday representing talented musicians from the Greencastle community.

The full participation of children will be an intentional focus of the Mosaic worship experience. Children, after all, are full spiritual beings in the life of faith. They are not “future” church members, as is often assumed.

The Prayground is an interactive space designed for children to engage in worship through wonder, exploration, beauty and creative play. During the children’s blessing part of the service, children and an accompanying grownup are welcome to come to the front for a brief blessing and then proceed to the Prayground where they may continue worshipping through quiet exploration and creative play.
